Areas of Ministry

Hospitality Center [see photos]
Located at 522 SW 13th Avenue, the Center is a "home" for lonely hotel dwellers, people camping out, and people with mental illness and addiction. We provide an emotionally safe, nonviolent place for people to come and play table games, work on puzzles and read. Hospitality Ministers have developed lasting friendships with people who come to the Center.

Footcare Ministry [see photos]
Our friends contend with blisters and corns that make walking painful. We wash and massage their feet, trim nails and provide socks and shoes.

Annual Christmas Party [see photos]
This is a warm celebration with caroling, plenty of food and presents for all.

Comedy Movie Night
Laughter, love, hope and faith, can strengthen the immune system. With this in mind, we show comedy movies to bring a sense of well being to our friends.

Monthly Birthday Party
Plenty of cake and ice cream, singing Happy Birthday to street friends makes them feel special and remembered. For most, this is the only time their birth is honored.

Annual Spiritual Retreat [see photos]
Each year guests from the Center are taken on a three day retreat at a forested campground to explore their spiritual journeys. Shared experiences include hiking, cooking meals, music and craft projects. The focus of shared discussions is on reawakening one's spiritual life.

Memorial Celebration
Each year during Holy Week we remember those who have died in the Burnside/Downtown neighborhood. It is a time for sharing memories of friends, a sharing that comes from Christian, Jewish and Native American traditions. At the close of the service we read the name of each person who has died in the past year and light a candle to symbolize the value of each person as a child of God.

Recreational Outings [see photos]
Picnics, trips to the beach or to the mountains, taking in a ball game or a concert all give our friends something to look forward to. Renewal is an important dimension in the Nightwatch ministry.
